A non-invasive procedure to detect abnormalities within the internal organs.
X-rays, or radiographs, are a vital diagnostic tool in the veterinary hospital. They allow us to see the inside of the animal by merely taking a picture. With radiographs, we can visualize many different organs and systems of the body; such as the bladder, liver, intestines, colon, kidneys, heart, and lungs. By having a veterinarian examine the pictures, we can diagnose many different types of diseases and conditions.
Taking an x-ray is very similar to taking any other picture. We lay the pet on the table for the picture we want so that we can see all the parts of the body that we need to look at. We then have the x-ray machine take the picture. The light that is emitted by the x-ray machine is captured by a capture plate below the table. The plate takes the image that was captured and turns it into a digital image on the computer that the veterinarian can view.
We also do dental x-rays. They are the same as a regular x-ray, just on a much smaller scale. During a dental procedure, if we see a tooth that looks like it may have some pathology, we can take an x-ray to see what the tooth looks like below the gums. With dental x-rays, we can evaluate the root of the tooth, the pulp cavity, the bone around the tooth and the density of the tooth. This helps us determine if a suspicious tooth needs to be removed or if it is healthy enough to be left in place.
